TEDxYouth@HongKong

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where the TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

TEDxYouth@HongKong is an annual event which celebrates the Universal Children’s Day on November 20, and is in its sixth year. As a TED offshoot, TEDxKids/Youth events will be following many of the TED speaker rules. Speakers are banned from “selling from the stage,” and there is strict enforcement of the clock. If you accept our invitation, we will offer further suggestions on how to tailor the perfect talk for our audience.

Last year, TEDxYouth@Hong Kong 2014 hosted one of the largest local TEDx events that reach 1000+ audiences through on-site and live streaming participation. Presenters included the Director of Entertainment and Costuming at Hong Kong Disneyland David Lightbody (利百為), Co-founder of GogoVan Steven Lam, Chairman of RunOurCity Leong Cheung (張亮), Former Hong Kong Taekwondo Team, Holly Yan (甄可儀), HKGNA Musical Angel Lee Shing (李昇), visual artist Vivian Ho (何博欣), and founder of Metta Communications Andrew Lee (李孔仁).

TEDxYouth@HongKong 2013 reached over 2000 viewers with a mixture of on-site attendance and streaming partner schools. In 2012, TEDxYouth@HongKong became the largest TEDx event in Hong Kong with 1600+ participants by pioneering two innovations: 1) simultaneous live-streaming to partner schools that reached 1300+ viewers in Hong Kong, and 2) incorporating speakers, performers, and activities into the event. Last year, the range of over 20 presenters included founder of Chocolate Rain, Prudence Mak (麥雅端), comedian Vivek Mahbubani, indie music band ToNick, the first female postmaster of Hong Kong Jessie Ting (丁葉燕薇), blogger with almost half a million followers Dr. William Lo (盧 永仁博士), and four-time Wushu World Champion Marvel Chow (周定宇).

TEDxYouth@HongKong 2011 expanded to host 200 attendees in Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Chiang Chen Theatre. A fresh set of inspirational presentations from Fred Lam Fai (林輝), Dr. Fan Ning (范寧醫生) from Médecins Sans Frontières, author of Hong Kong Kid, Wong Ming Lok (黃明樂), beekeeper Michael Leung, Hong Kong’s award- winning Diocesan Boy’s School Choir, inventor Cory Kidd, and Cantonese opera from two exceptional five and six year old performers.

TEDxYouth@HongKong began in 2010 with around 100 attendees and attracted international and local talents alike including TED performer Jake Shimabukuro, ultramarathon runner and motivational speaker Derek Kwik (郭振), local designer Billy Potts from Handsome Bag Co., Hong Kong’s then U10 Tennis champion Alvina Lai, and Hong Kong’s youth music star G.E.M..
